Excuse o' the Week

The Excuse of the Week Award goes to…

[This is an actual letter, but has been edited to avoid naming-names. We wish we could honestly say this is an unusual occurance.]

It has been a year now since we got our ferrets. They have been wonderful pets and we have given them the best home we could. We cleaned their cage twice daily, and let them out with us at least once and many times twice daily. We have taken them to the vets many times, and have paid the bill honorably and responsibly, if not actually happily. We gave them a great cage, and many toys. We bought them the best food we could, mixing a blend of several varieties as we were instructed to. Fresh water every day. Careful monitoring to make sure they weren't eating things they weren’t supposed to eat. One bath…they didn’t really like it and we didn’t really think they needed it. We have loved them very much. But we have finally hit our limit. They are very high maintenance pets and we just no longer can afford the time and the money that they need to keep them happy and healthy as they deserve.

I know you and everyone else warned us about them as well as you could. Some of the warnings didn’t apply to us…our girls never really bit, and we got used to their smell relatively quickly. They are pretty half-hearted about litter boxes, though I think ours are in the better than average range. And I never expected them to be so diligent in searching for bad things to eat. And the vet bills are killing us. It wouldn’t be quite so bad if I thought the vet was actually improving them, but we keep taking them to the vet and the vet never knows what’s wrong. Right now one is sick, and I’m not even sure if she will make it. My wife hand feeds her several times a day, plus gives her several different kinds of medicine. And still she wastes away. It’s not easy for us to fail like this. It’s not easy to admit that failure to you.

Anyway, I know you will be angry at me, and I am sorry. I did the best I could. I’ve come to you hoping you will find a way to help them, and find them a good home. I might be able to find them a home here, but I could never screen out bad owners as well as you could. Some 18 year old girl at the pet store wanted them, but I don’t think she was ready for the responsibility. Along with the two girls, I would include their cage, toys, accessories and food. Please let me know if there is anything you can do. I know I have never been a joiner. I did not join any of the ferret clubs or causes. I’m not that type of person. But no one could have given these girls any better home than we did. Now, I hope someone can give them their next home.
